Mittelbau Subcamps Information and Memorial Site

The Dora camp was the center of a widely ramified network of subcamps in the southern Harz region, which were combined in October 1944 to form the independent Mittelbau concentration camp. In April 1945, the Mittelbau concentration camp complex consisted of 39 subcamps. The SS imprisoned over 40,000 people there in 1945. In most of the Mittelbau camps, prisoners were forced to excavate tunnels; hardly any of the underground facilities were completed. The SS set up barracks camps near the construction sites. The largest concentration camp subcamps were established near Nordhausen in the communities of Ellrich, Harzungen and Rottleberode.
