The Ellrich-Juliushütte Concentration Camp was the largest subcamp within the Mittelbau concentration camp complex. Its catastrophic living and working conditions led to a high mortality rate. After the end of World War II, the inner-German border ran through the former camp complex. Not until German reunification was it possible to develop a memorial site, a process involving a wide range of initiatives and private individuals.

Outside Germany, the name Ellrich-Juliushütte plays a major role in the commemorative culture of many neighbouring countries. Over the next few years, the mass graves found on the former camp grounds in 2019 will be transformed into dignified grave sites. The Ellrich-Juliushütte Memorial is thereby undergoing further changes.

The following educational offerings with various emphases are possible:

Tours providing an overview of the former camp grounds explain the unique role of the subcamp within the history of the Mittelbau network (90 min).

As part of a multi-day event at the Mittelbau-Dora Memorial, extended stays in Ellrich lasting several hours can focus on topics such as forced labour, the social context at the time, and the culture of remembrance.
