The Polish student was not even 18 when he was hauled away into the German Reich. He was made a forced laborer in the area around Leipzig. After an escape attempt in March 1943 he was sent to the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

Freshly released from the infirmary there, the SS put him on the first transport to the Dora subcamp on 28 August 1943. There he had to perform hard labor expanding the tunnels. Later he was sent to the Harzungen and Ellrich-Juliushütte subcamps, where he also worked in the tunnels.

He managed to escape near Hamburg while on an evacuation transport. He was liberated by Allied troops near Lüneburg. After the war he returned to his hometown, Poznań.
